Barata Streetstuf officially announces the first ever ‘Lae Spelling Bee & Debates’, that will be held from the 22nd to 26th May 2017 in Lae, with finals held at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Indoor Stadium. It aims to become a platform for Lae Students to voice their opinions on issues they face, from the youth perspective.

The event will consist of a spelling bee competition between the City’s Upper Primary Schools and a debate competition between the Secondary Schools. All Primary and Secondary Schools are expected to participate, with most confirming participation.

The event will be accompanied by a special performance by Barata Streetstuf Partners DJ TraVy, an up-and-coming DJ in the PNG music scene, who will be debuting an exclusive youth positive music track highlighting the issues youth face, and their affirmations for the future. This track will feature guest vocals from Lae Native and Vocal Fusion Singing Sensation, Tehila Ben-Oba, which will also be released to mainstream radio.

In hosting this event, Barata Streetstuf seeks to highlight the importance of having the youth perspective heard and potential known, changing the general narrative of how youth are viewed in Papua New Guinea. They hope to do this through discussion of the main topics of the event, being Youth Issues, Climate Change and Gender Equality, translating to increasing confidence in young people, while creating healthy inter-school relationships.

It is a sponsorship based event, with Tribal Sport PNG being the first sponsor for this event. The Organizers are also fund-raising for it, with Sausage Sizzles at Eriku Oval every weekend leading up to the event, beginning Saturday 29th April. Invitations are open to interested individuals and business houses who would like to assist in supporting the event, to contact the organizers.

This event is part of Barata Streetstuf’s Social Responsibilities Plan as a youth-focused business. It is being organized by a youth collective of volunteers that were born, raised in and call Lae their home. They are led by Christopher Lam, a Secondary School graduate from Lae and Founder of Barata Streetstuf, who has also co-produced PNG Fashion Week 2016 as part of his experience in events.

Attendance to the event is free to the public, except the finals day, with tickets going on sale for K5 early next month. Details can be found on the official facebook page, ‘Barata Streetstuf’.
